Music Minute - Mama B: Puffer Fish

Acclaimed artist Mama B (Jacq Becker) delights audiences once again with the release of her latest single, "Puffer Fish," from her enchanting debut album 'Imaginology.' Available now on all streaming platforms, "Puffer Fish" invites listeners into a world of imaginative narratives and soulful melodies, perfectly timed for spring celebrations.

"Puffer Fish" is built on a slinky rhythm with pastel jazzy chords and showcases Mama B's soulful vocals, filled with clever and evocative wordplay. One playful passage exemplifies the song's whimsical nature: "Sometimes it’s better to be tiny/Swim where no one else can go/And if anyone should find me/I’ll hold my breath and then I’ll blow!" This track is sure to capture the hearts of both children and adults alike with its charming lyrics and captivating sound.

"With 'Puffer Fish,' I wanted to create a song that feels like a gentle, musical embrace—a reminder of the small joys and the big adventures we can find in the quietest moments,” shares Mama B. “It's a tune for mothers and children to share, laugh, and dream to."

Following the success of the album's first single "Unicorn," "Puffer Fish" continues to showcase Mama B’s unique ability to blend sophisticated production with timeless songwriting. Her background as a music executive and a pop songwriter, with her music featured in major film and television productions and collaborations with industry giants, enriches her songs with depth and a universal appeal.

I had a chance to learn more about her in this interview.

What do you love about creating music for families?
The hope in creating 'Imaginology' was to create an album that families could enjoy and create memories to. I wanted to provide a soundscape for activities, long rides in the car, and playtime where parents and their kids could connect and escape into their imaginations. I love nothing more then when friends send me videos of their kids engaging with my songs, it truly never gets old!

Why is music so beneficial for kids?
In creating children's music, my hope was to encourage movement, sensory regulation, and encourage kids to get outside and get lost in their imaginations. Great music has the power to transform kids' moods within seconds. I wanted to create sounds, songs, and moods that parents could use for any occasion. Whether that be self-regulation, celebratory moments, or wind down music.

Why is it important for kids to be encouraged to use their imagination?
It's too easy to get lost in the technology and screens that offer parents well-deserved "breaks." But to balance this, it's so important to also offer opportunities for kids to create, reflect, and get lost in new rhythm and sounds.

How do you find balance as a mom, juggling things like family, self-care, and being a musician?
I can't say I juggle it all gracefully,  but I definitely have my self-care routines that fill my soul every day. I'm a big fan of "solo mom" walks first thing in the morning. Before the chaos of the day takes over, I leave my house and get a 20 minute walk around the block in before attending to the needs of others and my work day! I find these small rituals to be so necessary to find balance between the chaos of being a working mom.
