Birthday Buds is an organization that teaches children the joy of giving by pairing them with under-resourced families with kids who share their birthday month. Founded in 2012 by Grace Cowan, Birthday Buds transforms gift-giving into a meaningful experience by helping children understand the impact of generosity firsthand, rather than just accumulating more things.
Grace was inspired to start Birthday Buds after attending countless birthday parties for children who already had so much. “I knew there had to be a better way to celebrate all kids, regardless of their circumstances,” she says. The organization matches children up to age twelve with “birthday buddies,” providing families with a list of both fun wishes and essential items. The gifts are sent to the children in need before their special day, bringing joy and support to each family involved.
Birthday Buds goes beyond just gifts—they also provide essentials like cribs and toddler beds to new moms in need. Families often exchange photos, making the experience personal and meaningful for everyone involved. “Birthday Buds is a simple yet powerful way to instill the importance of generosity in young minds,” Grace explains. “It’s not just about giving gifts—it’s about fostering empathy and creating lasting connections.”
