Healthy Habits - Children's Dental Health Month

When it comes to kids’ dental health, parents have more options than ever. Traditional dentistry focuses on fixing cavities and cleaning teeth, but holistic dentistry takes a whole-body approach, looking at how to prevent tooth problems, and how oral health connects to overall wellness, growth, and development.   Holistic dentist and author Dr. Michelle Jorgensen has seen first hand how this approach can improve the dental and overall health of the entire family.

"Many families choose holistic care to avoid things like mercury fillings or fluoride in toothpaste and dental products," says Jorgensen, "but holistic dental care offers that and more!"  She explains that holistic dentists also focus on jaw and airway development—because how kids breathe and how their mouths grow impacts everything from sleep to focus to overall growth and health. If your child snores, breathes through their mouth, or has crowded teeth, it could be a sign of airway issues that need attention now, not later.

Holistic dentists also offer safer, more natural alternatives to fluoride, like hydroxyapatite in-office treatments and toothpaste. Hydroxyapatite is the same mineral that makes up enamel, so it naturally repairs and strengthens teeth—without the health risks of fluoride. Bonus: it helps with sensitivity and even whitens teeth.

Did you know sugar isn't the only thing that causes cavities?  Jorgensen confirms that minerals and vitamins, including calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins A, D3, and K2 don’t just help bones—they keep teeth strong, help prevent cavities, and even support proper jaw growth. And where can your family get more of these minerals and vitamins?  Load your kids up with full-fat yogurt, cheese, butter from grass fed cows, nut mixes, soups made with bone broth and green smoothies.

So this Children’s Dental Health Month, let’s think beyond just brushing and flossing. Choosing the right toothpaste, focusing on nutrition, and paying attention to how our kids breathe can set them up for a lifetime of strong, healthy smiles
