Healthy Habits - Chunky Vegan

Today’s parents are label readers—and with good reason. With growing concerns around additives and hidden ingredients, they’re seeking clean, transparent options for their little ones.

That’s where Chunky Vegan comes in. Founded by mom and former IT exec Camille Hardy, Chunky Vegan offers organic, plant-based baby food made with real, whole ingredients—no fillers, no junk.

Each recipe is developed with pediatric experts and packaged in glass to avoid toxins and microplastics.

I had a chance to learn more in this interview.

  1. What does “clean label” mean, especially in the context of baby food?
For us, a clean label is a straightforward ingredient list you can read in one breath. It means every component is there for nourishment, not shelf tricks or cost cutting. If a jar says Okinawa purple sweet potato, that is exactly what is inside along with a splash of filtered water to blend. No added sugar, preservatives, or fillers, just real food parents recognize.
  1. Why is it so important to have clean label food?
Infants and toddlers are still forming taste preferences, gut balance, and even immune defenses. Offering food made entirely from whole ingredients gives their bodies the nutrients they need without unnecessary additives. Clean label eating also teaches children early to appreciate natural flavors, so they are more likely to choose wholesome options as they grow.
  1. What surprising things are often found in baby food brands?
Many parents are shocked by how often fruit juice concentrates are used to sweeten purées, pushing sugar levels higher than you would expect. Fillers like rice flour or modified corn starch appear frequently to bulk up texture without adding nutrition. Some recipes add salt for flavor or longevity, something babies do not need. Additionally, certain grains like oats and rice can contain chemicals and trace heavy metals depending on their growing conditions, which is why careful sourcing matters.

  1. Why is it beneficial for brands to be transparent about ingredients?
Transparency builds trust. When parents pick up a jar of Chunky Vegan they should feel like they could recreate it in their own kitchen if they had the time. Clear labeling also keeps companies accountable for sourcing and quality. If we would not feed an ingredient to our own children, it does not go into our products. Sharing that openly invites parents into the process to make informed choices with confidence.
