Healthy Habits - Fried Food Substitutions

Dr. Ali Shehata, DO is a Board certified Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine physician based in Las Vegas. He shares information about fried foods that people can avoid buying.

“Fried foods are typically coated in flour, which results in more calories and more carbs,” says Ali. “An added result of being coated in flour is that they absorb extra fats and calories from the oils in which they’re fried.”

Below are Dr. Ali’s suggestions for fried foods to avoid:

  1. Donuts - many people don't realize that donuts are typically made by deep frying, which gives them that crispy coating we love so much.

  2. Fried Fish - although fish can be one of the lightest and healthiest meal items, frying it, often deep-frying, almost obliterates the health benefits.

  3. Fried Chicken - although the protein in chicken is very beneficial for health, once again, the idea of frying it adds too many unhealthy aspects.

  4. French fries or similar fried snack items - while frying vegetables may offer the least harm, it nonetheless takes low calories, health-promoting foods, and often triples or quadruples the amount of calories, as well as damage to your health.

Dr. Ali’s healthier suggestions:

  1. Baked potatoes instead of fries - a small baked potato (100 grams) contains 93 calories and 0 grams of fat, whereas the same amount (100 grams) of fries contains 319 calories and 17 grams of fat, or a 340% increase in calories!

  2. A baked donut: Unfortunately, all your favorite donut makers on the market typically deep fry their donuts, despite a typical fried glazed donut amounting to 260 calories (130 of those calories from fat), or 14 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugar. A similarly sized home-baked donut, on the other hand, only sets you back 160 calories, with 2 grams of fat and 13 grams of sugar, saving you 100 calories even though you get a touch more sugar.

  3. As far as fish and chicken go, I advise my patients and weight loss clients to just bake them as it's so much healthier, and helps preserve the best aspects of the food. If you really want to get some added crunch and crispiness, consider making Parmesan or almond-crusted versions and air-frying, which reduces calories by at least 100 per serving, reduces saturated fat by up to 70%, all while giving you more fiber.
