A new study reveals looks at state data on spam calls between 2020 and 2024.
The study, conducted by Chicksx.com, a crypto exchange platform, analyzed over 16 million reported cases from the Federal Trade Commission Do Not Call Registry from 2020 to 2024 and compared them to the population of each state to determine which states report the highest number of spam calls per 100,000 residents.
Delaware takes the top spot with a total of 68,596 reported spam calls during the study period. Compared to the population of Delaware, this equates to a striking rate of 6,521 spam calls per 100,000 individuals, earning it the number one rank in the nation for spam call frequency. This is 1.5 times more than the national average of 4,378 calls per 100,000 residents. However, data shows that from 2020, there has been a 55% reduction in spam calls in the state, from 15,667 to 8,685 in 2024.
Following closely behind, Ohio claims the second spot. Ohio experienced a rate of 6,260 spam calls per 100,000 residents (743,915 total calls), which is higher than the national average of 4,378. The state has also seen a decrease in reported calls between 2020 and 2024, from 168,908 to 99,873.
Arizona claims the third spot, where its inhabitants faced 6,129 spam calls per 100,000 individuals (464,688 total calls between 2020 and 2024). The state saw its number grow 86% in 2024 (57,589) from 2023 (50,005), after declining for three years straight.
Virginia takes fourth place, with 537,974 spam calls, and a rate of 6,106 calls per 100,000 people. This figure reflects Virginia’s position as a hub for government agencies and defense contractors, which may make it a prime target for fraudulent schemes.
Maryland rounds out the top five with 380,973 spam calls and a rates of 6,083 per 100,000 population. Its economic activity and high connectivity may also contribute to its prevalence. The state's rate is 39% higher than the national average of 4,378 calls per 100,000 residents. Maryland saw an overall decline in calls over the last four years, as the yearly total went from 99,417 in 2020 to 41,831 in 2024.
Col orado, Nevada, New Jersey, and California complete the top ten, each experiencing substantial volumes of spam calls relative to their populations, ranging between 5,715 and 5,310 per 100,000 residents.
On the other side of the list, North Dakota, Alaska, and Mississippi are the states that registered the lowest number of spam calls in the country.
North Dakota had 16,875 spam calls between 2020 and 2024; Alaska had 17,114; Mississippi had 78,138. These translate into 2,118, 2,312, and 2,655 calls per 100,000 people.
Completing the list, the five states that received the least spam calls are Louisiana and Indiana with 2,824 and 2,920 complaints, respectively.
Al Alof, CEO of Chicksx.com, commented on the findings, “The prevalence of spam calls has become a significant concern for individuals and businesses alike, impacting productivity, privacy, and overall well-being. While advancements in technology offer solutions such as call-blocking apps and legislation targeting robo-callers, the persistent nature of this issue underscores the need for continued vigilance and innovation.”
