Caring Causes - Salvation Army Announces $500,000 Match to Spur Christmas Fundraising Effort

The Twin Cities Salvation Army has announced a $500,000 donation match, thanks to the generosity of several Salvation Army donors, encouraging others to support the crucial Christmas fundraising effort. This match initiative means that every donation made now will have twice the impact and help twice the number of people, for donations up to a total of $500,000.

The match campaign is an essential part of the organization’s Christmas fundraising effort, as 70% of its annual fundraising occurs during the holiday season.

“This season of giving is critically important for funding our programs throughout the year,” said Lt. Colonel Randall Polsley, Salvation Army Northern Division commander. “The support we receive this month will determine whether the entirety of our feeding, housing, and emergency assistance programs can continue unabated in 2026.”

More than a third of Minnesota households are below the ALICE threshold (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed)1—defined as earning enough to be above the poverty line but not enough to afford basic needs. That number translates to 834,000 households facing intense financial hardship, which are numbers that have not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Recent government reductions in feeding and housing stabilization services, combined with continued high prices for food, rent, and utilities, are creating financial challenges for Minnesota families trying to make ends meet. As a result, The Salvation Army has seen a nearly 25% increase in demand for services in Minnesota in the last year.

“Requests for food assistance and for help with overdue rent and utilities are particularly high,” said Captain Josh Polanco, Twin Cities commander. “This is a challenging time for Minnesota families, and we will work diligently to help all those who come to us seeking relief.”

“With the help of generous Minnesotans, we’ve been standing in the gap for those facing anxiety and despair for nearly 140 years,” said Polsley. “We hope this $500,000 match will encourage everyone to make a gift that will have twice the impact this holiday season.”

A $250,000 grant from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation is serving as the cornerstone for this year’s end-of-year match campaign. The grant, along with match gifts from numerous other donors, is designed to encourage individuals to donate now—effectively doubling the impact of each donation made this time of year. Hunger and shelter are two key focuses for Schulze Family Foundation grants.

“We’re grateful to the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation and all donors who help make our work possible,” Polsley said. “We invite those wanting to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors in need to make a gift—one that will do twice as much good.”
