Consumer Critique: Twerp

The word Twerp makes me laugh - it's kind of a funny word. And I was intrigued to get a chance to read the book Twerp, written from a sixth-grader's point of view.

Julian Twerski gets suspended, and then his teacher gives him a choice - to write about it in a journal, or to write the Shakespeare report. Julian keeps page after page, talking about all the interesting and very important events of a sixth-grader's life, before finally getting to the point at the very end, getting into the event itself, what happened and his perspective, and even some of the aftermath.

This would be a good read for adolescents, I think. There are a variety of events, written from a very real-sounding voice. It could also be a good family read to open up dialogue on a variety of events, from teenage love to dangerous decisions, from animal cruelty to bullying - all without being a preachy book. I liked it myself, as an adult reader - it brought back memories and made me laugh at all the terribly important things that later on really aren't that important after all.
