Smart Safety: MaceWear Pod

First Sign Technologies, in partnership with Mace Wear, recently launched the Mace Wear Pod, the first-ever crime fighting wearable device and app.  

 

At the “First Sign” of a violent attack, the Assault Alarm is activated and the speaker lets the attacker know that “evidence has been collected and help is on the way.”  The phone automatically begins to collect evidence, take photos, and call for help which will help identify, apprehend, prosecute and deter attackers. The Mace Wear Pod can be worn in five ways as a headband, wristband, key chain, belt clip and pendant. In addition to offering peace of mind, the Mace Wear Pod is lifestyle friendly, weighs only .3 ounces and is visibly discreet. 

 

For those not wearing the pod, the mobile app, which can be downloaded on iPhone and Android, can also be activated in four ways, by hitting the alert button, by shaking the phone, by dropping the phone when in a specified mode, and by setting a time to check-in and if not the alarm is activated.

What was the inspiration behind the MaceWear Pod?  

Rachel came up with the idea one night when she had an uneasy feeling many woman can identify with - her husband wasn't home, it was already dark and the outside light wasn't on yet, and her dogs were quiet - not an ideal situation to walk into. She started to think it was odd that homes and property have advanced security systems but the individual had none. It is the individual that is the most important after all. She came up with the idea, and then the inspiration to start the company was from a family member who was attacked in a facility full of security. Even in a highly secure environment she was left to fend for herself. That is when Rachel and AJ (husband and wife) decided enough was enough and they were going to do something about it.  

 

What advantages does it have over other personal defense products?  

Automatic, realistic, and discreet. Firearms, knives, stun guns, pepper spray, manual panic alarms, and cell phones all become unrealistic and useless when the attacker has the element of surprise, or even worse, your trust. First Sign with the Mace Wear Pod provides automatic alarm triggers in the event of a violent attack in a discreet form factor. Monitoring is also critical to the system because once a user goes mobile there are complexities someones personal emergency contacts cannot overcome. We protect what matters most for only $5 per month vs $40 per month to protect your home and property.  

 

How might it be used?  

Walking from place to place such as to your car or to and from the bus stop is a common example. The user could use one of the seven different ways to trigger the alarm depending on what works best for them. Showing a piece of property, going on a date, or traveling to unfamiliar areas are other great times to use First Sign. Ie. I am writing this email from a hotel that was not as advertised and we have used First Sign and the Mace Wear Pod every time we enter and exit.    

 

What other safety tips can you share?  

Personal safety is complex and dynamic. A multi-layered response that includes all the traditional measures and self-defense such as Taekwondo (especially their rape prevention classes), Krav Maga, and other styles are great. Most people think a violent crime will never happen to them but the numbers tell a different story. Violent criminals are in every demographic and race. The best thing we can all do is be aware of this and prepare in a way that does not impact our daily lifestyles, which is what First Sign does.
