Mealtime Magic: Kañiwa (Baby Quinoa)

Quinoa, the South American super food, is a relatively new addition to many American's diets. Quinoa has a cousin, nicknamed "baby quinoa." The seeds are half the size, darker, and sweeter than quinoa. It's a source of complete protein and amino acids, and is very high in iron. It contains no gluten and needs no rinsing. It also has B vitamins, calcium, and phosphorus, as well as omega fatty acids.

Its nutrient density and fiber make it a good grain for babies after about eight months. There are several ways to prepare baby- and toddler-friendly kañiwa dishes.
For a simple baby cereal, boil ½ cup kañiwa in a cup of water or milk for twelve minutes. Then, blend to a smooth purée. You can also add cinnamon or vanilla.
To make a pilaf, mix 1 cup cooked kañiwa with ⅓ cup chicken or vegetable stock, and ¼ cup peas. Simmer for ten minutes.
For a fruity treat, boil ¼ cup kañiwa with ½ cup water, then reduce to a simmer and a small diced apple and a spoonful of raisin. Simmer for five minutes, turn off, and stir in ½ mashed banana and a pinch of cinnamon.

(Always double-check with your physician about adding new foods to your baby's diet).

I had a chance to try out some Baby Quinoa thanks to Pereg Natural Foods. They package it in 5-ounce boxes ($3.57) & resealable 16 oz. bags ($5.50), and is available to food buyers, distributors and food service. Pereg Natural Foods products are sold at supermarkets, specialty stores, and natural food stores nationwide.

KAÑIWA HAS BEEN GROWN FOR MILLENIA
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, kañiwa was first domesticated by pre-Columbian settlers of Tiahuanacu in what is now Bolivia and Peru. Suitable for growing in cold temperatures high in the mountains, this super seed remains an Andean staple, and is typically taken on long trips by locals, who prize the lasting energy and nutrients it provides.
